Blue
Ridge Parkway, the most-visited national park, hugs the crest
of the mountains, 15 minutes away.
Crooked Creek Wildlife Management Area, almost anyone can catch trout in this state facility of 1,600 acres. Six-mile-long Crooked Creek is stocked almost every night from mid-March to Labor Day. Hunt for deer, turkey and squirrel. Concession stand, restrooms and picnic tables, (804) 367-1000, 20 minutes from Laurel Mountain.
Grayson Highlands State Park, voted #1 in the nation last year, hiking, horseback riding, bicycle, and some great trout fishing, 60 minutes away.

River Trail State Park, Virginia's 39-mile-long state park follows
an abandoned railway bed 57 miles from Galax to Pulaski, all relatively
level for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Mill, this old watermill is one of the Parkway's most popular and
most photographed spots, features a self-guided trail, gristmill, blacksmith
shop and pioneer exhibits.
